GROWING up, I was a tomboy.
We had a big family and sometimes we were hired to do commercials together. That was fun, but occasionally I’d be outside playing with my Hot Wheels and say, “I want to stay here and play with my cars.” I didn’t play with Barbies.
I wanted to be an Olympic horseback rider or a jockey.
I did a lot of dressage and jumping, but I grew too tall and that ended my dream. Then, when I was 23, I discovered endurance racing. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Straight after graduating from high school, I got my first movie role [in Skatetown, USA].
It taught me a lot; I thought I could do it, but once I was onset I was so nervous I couldn’t get my lines out. Even in school I was really shy. So, I discovered acting isn’t as easy as it looks, and decided to do something about it.
I started taking acting classes.
After that, I had guest roles in TV series [including Happy Days and Magnum P.I.] and parts in TV movies and music videos. Then, in 1987, I was cast as Brooke Logan in The Bold and the Beautiful.
I wasn’t thrilled to do a soap opera; I just wanted to do movies.
But the show was new, so I could sort of create my own character. I signed on for four years and didn’t think I’d make it through. Now it’s been 24 years.
I’d love to do something different once in a while.
My husband [Alex D’Andrea] is a talent manager, so he tries to send me out for different roles, but I’m typecast as Brooke.
Brooke and Ridge [Ronn Moss] keep getting married over and over again.
Different weddings, different dresses, different rings; I could become a wedding planner! It’s kind of cute how she keeps going back to him and they keep getting married, but I also think, why not just live together?
Sometimes Ronn says, “Do you realise I’ve been with you longer than any of my wives and any of my relationships in real life?” He cracks me up. We’re so comfortable with each other. We’re like brother and sister.
I was 27 when I married my first husband [Skott Snider].
It doesn’t sound too young, but I was a young 27. I see more people waiting until their 30s or even 40s to get married now. That’s good; there’s so much you need to learn in life before you commit to someone.
I hated being pregnant, but I loved having babies.
[Lang has three children: Jeremy, 21, and Julian, 19, from her first marriage and Zoe, 14, with D’Andrea, as well as a stepdaughter, Danyelle, 20.] It’s such an amazing thing, a baby being born and holding it for the first time. Being a mother is so special, and it’s something you can’t really understand until it happens to you.
The reason I hated being pregnant was because I’m so active and athletic.
I like to jog, ride my horse and go swimming at the beach - how do you do that with a big tummy and boobs?
I believe in letting yourself age gracefully.
[Lang is 50.] I tell the producers, “I can’t do those lingerie and bathing suit scenes for the rest of my life. Can’t you give me a break?” But they keep wanting me to do them.
There’s a lot of pressure in Hollywood to look young, but if you try to keep up with it too much, you’ll get yourself in trouble. If you have one surgery, then you’ll want another and another, so I try to stay as natural as I can.
Whenever the show ends, it will be really hard.
It’s become such a big part of our lives - not just for the four original characters, a lot of the people behind-the-scenes have been there from the beginning. It’s really been a family for a long time.
